Because no two eCommerce stores are exactly alike, there’s no perfect, one-size-fits-all design solution out there. That said, there are some general design principles that can help encourage your visitors to stick around and shop.
When crafting a visual identity for your brand, consider all of the elements that go into it – font choices, colour selections, images and so on – as part of a larger whole. Context is key in design.
For example, a handwriting-style font can look great on its own, but may be unreadable when combined with the rest of your design. Your painstakingly photographed images may catch the eye on-screen in Photoshop, but may blend in or clash with the colours used in your design.

Themes & Styles
Design is a skill – and like with any skill, getting it right takes time. So why not get some help from someone who’s figured it out for you?
That’s where Themes and Styles come in. If you’re a Kong user, you can test out a range of different store themes hand-crafted in-house by our designers.
Certain themes will be better suited to your store than others, but here are a few you might like to take for a test drive. (It's easy. Here's how.)
Good for: art and photography.
This theme features eye-catching background images. These can be easily swapped out to quickly change the look of your store. Modern fonts and a centrally aligned layout let you show off key products on your homepage, while a dark colour palette lets your images shine.
Good for: beauty, fashion, jewellery, art and homewares.
If your products are photographed against a white background, this is the theme for you. Cleanly and spaciously laid out, it features full-screen homepage header images and a left-aligned layout. Classic serif fonts and muted colour selections make it a stylish choice for brands with a contemporary vibe.
Good for: clothing, beauty and jewellery.
Sophisticated fonts and a toned-back colour palette lend a sense of effortless, minimalist chic to your fashion or beauty brand. Full-screen homepage header images and a centrally aligned layout add a luxe tone, and the choice of background colours makes it ideal for product photography that incorporates white backdrops.
Good for: gadgets and novelties.
For those that disagree with the idea that less is more. Thumb your nose at minimalism with a large background image, vibrant colours and luscious fonts. A subtle grey content background tones things down enough for brands looking for a quick way to add style without going overboard. This centrally aligned layout lets you show off both collections and products on the homepage.
Good for: food and drink and homewares.
Classic yet distinctive, this theme incorporates a traditional colour palette offset with a bold burst of bright red, along with an eye-catching mix of fonts. A centrally aligned layout, full-screen header images and a natural homepage hierarchy make this an ideal choice for artisan-style brands.
Good for: homewares, craft items and homemade products.
Bold, contemporary colour stylings meet serif fonts for a mix of the old and new. Featuring a dark background ideal for making your light product photography pop, this theme features a left-aligned layout and a standard image size designed for smaller images.
